To Slash or not to Slash - True Fans/Anti fans?

"The Danny Phantom fans are crazy?"

By [name not given]

I was searching for DP fanart and came across this interesting one, it basically was the artist's opinion in art form of every single form of DP fan there was and how because the phandom was so split, that the artist refused to watch danny phantom or like it anymore.

I know it's kinda old, but hear me out: (I also realize this is supposedly a touchy subject for the phans.)

I had no idea that the fans for Danny Phantom were so split up like that (though i think that deviation's the artist's view on the individual categorizations of the types of phan- some of them i don't agree with/ find kind of offensive, but whatever. freedom of speech, and expression of own opinions.)

I actually became a "full phan" when season 2 was halfway done. (I lost cable at... i think right before The Ultimate Enemy aired. correction- I think 2 episodes before TUE aired. I heard that TUE involved Danny fighting his older evil self and went, OMG NO WAI and immediately went to watch it on turbonick. TUE's still my fav eppi to date.)

I didn't start joining internet DP fans until season 3 started internationally.

which is why i've missed out on the whole fanwar thing... (which i'm not 100% clear on as of yet.) and from the sound of it, was kind of a good thing.

i thought it was purely slash/anti-slash...

>.< (but i guess not)

Everyone needs to be united by the show and respect each other's way of showing their appreciation. And probably think before posting something, and truly see if that what you're typing is solely impulsive/irrational.

I'll admit while broswing through the DP fanart, there are pictures i'm not confortable with (especially when you google images for DP.) but it's not like i go and attack the person for doing it. (i'll report truly inappropriate works though.) And heck, I'm not comfortable with a lot of yugioh slash pairings (the only two that I like are puzzleshipping and prideshipping) and Harry Potter slash just scares me. (DumbledoreXharry. the man's dead, show him some respect!!! :/ ) But like I said, I don't go flaming/attacking people because they like something different than I do.

It's strange how that the yugioh fandom seems to be pretty united, despite having hundreds of different pairings and those who are just for the cards and those who are just for the anime, but we don't go about flaming other fan groups for it.

Why is the DP fandom so different?

Especially since DP's about to end?

Is it that hard to put aside differences and look at yourself rationally?

It's like that saying, "If you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything at all."

Aw hell, i'm not proud of my own obsession with yugioh or other shows (mom wants me to grow up and questions why I like this stuff. Childhood came kinda late for me. I blame the lack of internet. yes the lack of. (you try not having internet until like, a year ago. X.o;;))

But now that i'm going to college I realize something.

Maybe it is time to grow up, become more mature. I'll still act/think like a kid, but i'm going to start thinking more maturely than impulsively (impulsiveness is bad. trust me X.o;) because in four years, i'm going to be as anti-fun as that Flappy Bob clown in Fairly Oddparents was before the Pixies lost control. Heck, I fear I won't like cartoons anymore.

Some of you might be wondering where the hell this little speech came from.

It actually first started when I was at Anime EXPO 2007 collecting signatures for a petition to "Save Danny Phantom" (Keep it in production past season 3) when I asked an AVATAR cosplayer to sign, she said,

"No, the Danny Phantom fans are crazy."

... I didn't bother to ask her to elaborate, and moved down the line.

I didn't understand what she meant by that until i saw the deviation above me, as well as a couple others pretaining to this very subject.

I actually look back at myself and see that how obsessed I was with yugioh, and how well, quite frankly, it was kinda silly. X.o;; (I could've used that money for something else... O_o)

I also know that Mr. Butch Hartman, the creator stated that he doesn't support nor appreciate the use of his works in slash/inappropriate-related content.

(I don't think it means he hates the people who draw slash. I think it means he hates the people that make inappropriate versions of fanworks or use his work for inappropriate reasons/goals.)

When the creator comes out and says that, I respect it. You also have to look at the core demographic for this show- 7-12 year olds. I think that is one of the main reasons that Butch Hartman came out with that statement- Nick wouldn't exactly want a bunch of angry parents and confused children at their door pissed off that the show spawned inappropriate for the children works.

For yugioh, there's hundreds of pairings, a lot of them are crack pairings, but the creator hasn't voiced his opinion on slash, and in Japan, yugioh's actually intended for all audiences, some episodes contained content like blood, guns, big breasts, and violence that was edited for the american version. not only that, but it seems like Japan is more tolerant of slash of anime/manga because it's one of those otaku kinds of things. Fans may disapprove of certain pairings, but like I said, they don't go attacking the other fans for it.

And seriously, Danny Phantom's last season just aired, it seems like the fanwars are over, but the tension is still there. And seriously consider that this show was and is created for a pretty young audience.

Consider it this way: you created your own cartoon show for a children demographic. you're pretty damn proud of what you made and have the entire series planned out. then someone comes along, takes your work and makes it into porn. a kid is on the internet searching for your show and comes across that fanmade porn. How do you feel, now that you know that your creation spawned something that corrupted a child's mind? (I don't think society as a whole is ready to accept slash, do you?)

If I had my own show i'd be glad that people actually watch and like it, and heck, if they drew slash for fun, as long as it's not too explicit, i'd let that go, but if fans cross a line that makes fanwork creepy and questionable, then i'd say, "hey, i appreciate that you like my show, but could you please appreciate it in a more appropriate way? you're kinda hurting the image I want my show to give off, and kids watch this stuff too."

I guess my own personal opinion on this is that fans should be able to appreciate and make nice fanart/works, as long as it's (This applys to all series that I like/watch, NOT just DP.)

1. NOT porn (... "internet is for porn" is NOT a valid excuse.)
2. In no way offensive to the series itself (meaning like those who hate the show make fun of it in some way, example- yugioh= "you-gay-ho" (not only is that homophobic but REALLY annoying when it's repeated in a stupid way over and over again. I LIKE YUGIOH. SO WHAT. >:( )

If some fans want to draw explicit inappropriate stuff, then they can, it's just they NEED TO KEEP IT TO THEMSELVES. NOT ON THE INTERNET.

I think non-explicit slash should be okay, just place a warning before people can see the image, right? so that people who don't want to see can't. I think that the episode "Identity Crisis" made the Fenton/Phantom pairing stronger and that the "
Kindred Spirits" made the Vlad/Danny one stronger... X.o

Vlad: "And i would watch a hundred more devolve into ectoplasm to get the perfect half-ghost son!" (what, he can't get a girlfriend?)

Seeing as how the fanwars are pretty much dead, is it even possible to unite the phandom, or did this fanwar make things beyond repair? The show's finished, why doesn't the phandom create something that all phans can enjoy and represent the true spirit of being a "phan"?
